5 Things Beginners Should Know Before Starting a Pottery Class

New to pottery? Don’t worry! You don’t need any experience to get started. Whether you’re curious, creative, or just looking for a relaxing activity — here’s what to know before your first class at Aromdee Art Studio.

1. No Experience? No Problem.

Our pottery classes are designed for absolute beginners. You’ll be guided step-by-step by our friendly instructors. Whether you’ve never touched clay before or think you’re “not artistic”, we’ll help you enjoy the process and discover your own creative rhythm.

2. Dress for a Little Mess

Pottery is a hands-on activity — and that means clay on your hands, clothes, and maybe even your shoes! We recommend wearing comfy clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. We also provide aprons at the studio to keep you clean and relaxed.

3. Choose a Style That Fits You

At Aromdee, we offer three beginner-friendly techniques:

Wheel-Throwing

For those who love a fun challenge! Spin clay on a pottery wheel and learn how to shape bowls, cups, or vases. It’s dynamic and a little messy, but deeply satisfying.

Hand Building

Perfect if you enjoy a slow, mindful pace. Use your hands to pinch, coil, or sculpt clay into any shape. Great for creating one-of-a-kind, personal pieces without the wheel.

Underglaze Painting

If you prefer a clean and creative experience, try painting on ready-made ceramics using colorful underglazes. It’s relaxing, artistic, and perfect for all ages.
Choose the technique that matches your mood, personality, or creative style — or try them all over time!

4. Your Pottery Takes Time

After class, your piece isn’t ready to go home just yet. It needs time to dry completely (around 7–10 days depending on the weather), then it goes through two firings in the kiln: one for bisque, one after glazing.
This process takes about 3–4 weeks in total to ensure your piece is durable, functional, and food-safe. But we promise — it’s worth the wait!

5. Pottery is a Mindful, Joyful Practice

Pottery isn’t just about the result — it’s about enjoying the journey. It teaches patience, focus, and embracing imperfections. Each piece tells a story, and even little “mistakes” can turn into something beautiful. Just breathe, relax, and let your hands do the work.
